夜未央

湯新楣譯 Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night

On the pleasant shore of the French Riviera, about half way between Marseilles and the Italian border, stands a large, proud, rose-colored hotel.

Deferential palms cool its flushed facade, and before it stretches a short dazzling beach. Lately it has become a summer resort of notable and fashionable people;

泛紅的正面有畢恭畢敬的棕櫚樹遮陰送涼, 旅館之前有短短一片耀眼的沙灘, 近來了名流和時髦人物的避暑勝地;

a decade ago it was almost deserted after its English clientele went north in April.

Now, many bungalows cluster near it, but when this story begins only the cupolas of a dozen old villas rotted like water lilies among the massed pines between Gausse’s Hotel des Etrangers and Cannes, five miles away.

如今附近是一座座的平房, 然而這故事開始時, 高斯外僑旅館和五哩外的康城之間一片松林中, 只有十來所老別墅的圓頂像睡蓮般淍敗。

many = 一座座
a dozen = 十來所
rotted like water lilies = 像睡蓮般淍敗
