The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

V. The Five Orange Pips

P.151
“Tut! tut!”
cried Sherlock Holmes.
“You must act, man, 你一定得行動起來,顆計,
or you are lost.
Nothing but energy can save you.
This is no time for despair.”

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
The Bosombe Valley Mystery

Leave Paddington by the 11:15

* * *

We were seated at breakfast one morning, my wife and I, when the maid brought in a telegram. It was from Sherlock Holmes and ran in this way:

`Have you a couple of days to spare? Have just been wired for from the west of England in connection with Boscombe Valley tragedy. Shall be glad if you will come with me. Air and scenery perfect. Leave Paddington by the 11:15.'

`What do you say, dear?' said my wife, looking across at me. `Will you go?'

`I really don't know what to say. I have a fairly long list at present.'

Oh, Anstruther would do your work for you. You have been looking a little pale lately. I think that the change would do you good, and you are always so interested in Mr. Sherlock Holmes' cases.

`I should be ungrateful if I were not, seeing what I gained through one of them,' I answered. `But if I am to go, I must pack at once, for I have only half an hour.'

It is said that Mr Decadent and Shen Tung-chao were discussng the Governor and how it was just because he was talented and wanted quick promotion that he comitted so many acts of injustice, then they both sighed.

四月之死 I Shall Not Care: (李敖譯)

When I am dead and over me bright April / Shakes out her rain-drenched hair, / Tho' you should lean above me broken-hearted, / I shall not care.

I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful / When rain bends down the bough, / And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted / Than you are now.

Epitaph:

Serene descent, as a red leaf's descending / When there is neither wind nor noise of rain, / But only autumn air and the unending / Drawing of all things to the earth again.

So be it, let the snow fall deep and cover / All that was drunken once with light and air. / The earth will not regret her tireless lover, / Nor he awake to know she does not care.

關不住了 Over The Roofs, IV: (胡適譯)

時時從屋頂上吹來;

I said, ``I have shut my heart
As one shuts an open door,
That Love may starve therein
And trouble me no more.''

But over the roofs there came
The wet new wind of May,
And a tune blew up from the curb
Where the street-pianos play.

My room was white with the sun
And Love cried out to me,
``I am strong, I will break your heart
Unless you set me free.''

談生

列異傳 (trs. from The Man Who Sold a Ghost, by HY Yang and Gladys Yang)

The prince of Suiyang's daughter

The scholar Tan was still unmarried at forty, much to his distress. One night he was studying The Book of Songs at midnight when a girl of about sixteen came in. Her beauty and splendour had no equal on earth, and she offered to be his wife.

She warned him, though: "I am no ordinary woman. For three years you must not look at me by torchlight."

They married and had a son, and when the boy was two years old, Tan could contain his curiosity no longer. While his wife lay asleep he held a torch over her. From the waist up she was flesh like any other woman, but from the waist down she was nothing but dry bones!

Just then his wife woke up. "You have wronged me, husband!" she cried. "I was soon to have become a mortal. Why couldn't you wait for one more year instead of holding that torch over me?" Tan made abject apologies.

"Now we must part for ever," she said in tears. "You must take good care of my son. If you are too poor to support yourself, come with me now and I shall give you a present."

方 = 將

He followed her into a splendid hall --- a rare building richly furnished --- where she gave him a robe made of pearls. "You can live on this," she told him. And she tore a strip from his gown.

Later Tan sold the robe to the prince of Suiyang for ten million coins. As soon as the prince set eyes on it, he said: "That belonged to my daughter. This fellow must be a grave-robber."

He had Tan tried, and refused to believe his story. But upon inspecting the grave, they found it unbroken. And when they opened it, under the coffin lid they discovered the strip of Tan's garment. They perceived that his son resembled the princess too.

So at last the prince was convinced. Summoning Tan, he returned him the robe and made him his son-in-law, while the child was recommended for a post in the palace guard.

(Yang, HY and Gladys trs., The Man Who Sold a Ghost)

Woman into carp:
A man of Pengcheng took a wife
but had no liking for her, 不悅之
and started sleeping outside.
After a month or more 月餘日
she asked: 婦曰:
"Why don't you come home?"
"Because you slip out every night," was his reply.

"I never have!" she declared.
Her husband was surprised.
His wife told him: 婦云:
"As you let your fancy wander, 君自有異志
you have been bewitched."
"Next time someone comes, 後有至者
seize hold of her 君便抱留之
and fetch a light to find out 索火照視之
what creature it is."

Later on a strange woman came 後所願還至
pretending to be his wife,
but hesitated on the threshold
and had to be pushed in.
As soon as she was in bed 即上床
the man seized her and asked:
"Why do you go out every night?"
"You are having an affair with that girl in the east house," was the answer.
"You have made up this story of ghosts 欲托鬼魅
to excuse yourself."
Then he let her off 婿放之
and they slept together.

In the middle of the night 夜半
it came to him: 心悟
this is not my wife!"
He seized her 乃向前攬捉
and shouted for a torch.
The woman shrank and shrivelled,
and when he looked
she was a carp two feet long.

尤其楊譯這一句 "You have made up this story of ghosts to excuse yourself."

Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang, The Man Who Sold a Ghost)

Han Ping and his wife:

Han Ping, steward to Prince Kang of Song, married a beautiful daughter of the He family. But the prince took her from him. When he protested, he was imprisoned and sentenced to hard labor on the city wall.

Then his wife secretly wrote to him to say: Rain, ceaseless rain, / Great the river, deep the water, / Yet there is sunrise in my heart.

This letter fell into the hands of the prince, who showed it to his followers, but no one could make out its meaning.

Then the minister Su He said: "The first line means that she is longing for him all the time, the second that they have no way of getting in touch, the third that she intends to take her life." Then Han Ping killed himself.

His wife secretly tore her clothes. When the prince went up the tower with her, she threw herself from the top; and when his followers tried to seize her, her clothes tore away and she was dashed to death.

On her belt she had left this message: "Your Highness wishes me to live, but your servant chose to die. Please bury me with Han Ping."

The prince was angry and refused her request, ordering the local people to bury her in a separate grave.

"You speak of your endless love," said the prince. "If you can make these tombs come together, I will not stand in your way."

Then within one day two great catalpa trees sprang up above the two graves. In ten days they grew to an enormous size, and their branches inclined towards each other, their roots intertwined together beneath the soil, and their twigs interwound above.

And two love birds, one male and one female, stayed on these trees, not departing morning or night. They billed and cooed most plaintively, and uttered heart-rending cries.

The people of Song lamented the lovers' death and gave this tree the name "the tree of love." The southerners say the birds were the spirits of Han Ping and his wife.

In Suiyang today there is a town named Han Ping, and people still sing of the lovers.

She Walks in Beauty / By Lord Byron

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
她走在美的光彩中,像夜晚 / 皎潔無雲而且繁星漫天;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

*
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

*
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Maugham, The Portrait of a Gentleman

I arrived in Seoul towards evening and after dinner, tired by the long railway journey from Peking, to stretch my cramped legs I went for a walk.

I wandered at random along a narrow and busy street. The Koreans in their long white gowns and their little white top-hats were amusing to look at and the open shops displayed wares that arrested my foreign eyes.

Presently I came to a second-hand bookseller's and catching sight of shelves filled with English books went in to have a look at them.

I glanced at the titles and my heart sank. They were commentaries on the Old Testament, treatises on the Epistles of St. Paul, sermons and lives of divines doubtless eminent, but whose names were unfamiliar to me; I am an ignorant person.

I supposed that this was the library of some missionary whom death had claimed in the midst of his labours and whose books then had been purchased by a Japanese bookseller. The Japanese are astute, but I could not imagine who in Seoul would be found to buy a work in three volumes on the Epistle to the Corinthians.

But as I was turning away, between volume two and volume three of this treatise I noticed a little book bound in paper. I do not know what induced me to take it out. It was called the Complete Poker Player and its cover was illustrated with a hand holding four aces. I looked at the title-page. The author was Mr. John Blackbridge, actuary and counseller-at-law, and the preface was dated 1879.

I wondered how this work happened to be among the books of a deceased missionary and I looked in one or two of them to see if I could find his name. Perhaps it was there only by accident. It may be that it was the entire library of a stranded gambler and had found its way to those shelves when his effects were sold to pay his hotel bill.

But I preferred to think that it was indeed the property of the missionary and that when he was weary of reading divinity he rested his mind by the perusal of these lively pages. Perhaps somewhere in Korea, at night and alone in his mission-house, he dealt innumerable poker hands in order to see for himself whether you could really only get a straight flush once in sixty-five thousand hands.

But the owner of the shop was looking at me with disfavour so I turned to him and asked the price of the book. He gave it a contemptuous glance and told me I could have it for twenty sen. I put it in my pocket.

The labour required to acquire a real familiarity with a foreign tongue is profitless.

It was the first day of summer. It was already warm when the patrol left the village.

The lieutenant marched in front and the eleven men followed in single file.

The lieutenant led them into a wood where it was cool and you could hear the dry twigs breaking underfoot.

Under the shady banks and on the north side of the trees there was still a little snow.

It was only a small wood and it gave out onto a large grassy down.

The men marched behind the lieutenant across the down.

The grass was almost ankle high and there were many early summer flowers, some primroses still, and bluebells.

Mitka picked some bluebells and threaded them through the bayonet socket of his rifle.

None of the men was talking, but some behind Mitka also picked flowers which they wound around their rifles.

It was warm and the men were sweating. They still wore their winter clothes.

After marching for an hour the lieutenant rested his men beside a stream.

He wanted to rest himself and there was no political officer with the party.

He rested for ten minutes. After that they went on over the wide down.

The country was the undulating steppeland of the South. They could hear the sound of gunfire in the distance.

Mitka took some sunflower seeds from his pocket and began to munch them, spitting out the husks. Another man was chewing a turnip he had found near the village.

The patrol had crossed the wide down and had come to a wood.

As they approached the wood the lieutenant stopped. He could hear the sound of an airplane. The airplane sounded close to them, but the lieutenant could not see it.

Mitka had heard many such airplanes.

He stepped out of the file and began to unbuckle his trousers. He had wanted to do this for the last hour and now was a convenient moment.

Jn 21:18 (Sarah Ruden)
when you were a young man, you belted up your clothes and walked around wherever you wanted. But when you get old, you'll stretch out your hands, and someone else will truss you in a belt and take you where you don't want to go.
