Course Content

Written at the end of the 16th century, Shakespeare's dramatic representation of English history is poised on the cusp between the older and newer conceptions of history. The older approach to history was guided by the providential theory of history, a Christian conception going back to Augustine, in which human history is nothing but episodes in the unfolding of God's plan, and the destinies of men and nations are the working of divine retributive justice. The providential view of history is associated with the medieval political theory of the divine right of kings, which holds that the king is God's representation on earth and the king is accountable only to God and not to men.

By contrast, the new approach to history came from its concern for causes construed not in terms of cosmic history and divine justice but in terms of the characters of men and the nature of polity, it thus explains history in Machiavellian terms of force, fortune, and practical politics. Shakespeare's English history plays, however, seemed to privilege neither Providential nor Machiavellian views of historical causation. Rather, by exploring the theatrical potential of rival theories of history, Shakespeare had dramatic characters speak and act from differing and opposing views of history and politics.

This course offers an overview of Shakespeare's eight English history plays in the order of their composition: Henry VI (Parts 1, 2 and 3), Richard III, Richard II, Henry IV (Parts 1 and 2), and Henry V. In their totality, these eight plays dramatize a polyphonic history of a nation in crisis and on trial.
