on blog (草草記下一些對blog的念頭)

1. blog 跟 email 和 bbs 不同, 是有核心意義,卻無明確分界的概念. and what matters is the form, not the use, content and quality.

2. i agree with tungpo that weblog is more like (明清)筆記 (as many of us 不約而同地 employed such a name for our blogs )

3. or 個人專欄 in today's language.

4. weblog is not diary, (though you can use weblog or anything to write diary), because

a) bloggers aware the existence of the potential readers beside himself, though some of them know, and maybe enjoy, that there is none. (that does not mean that bloggers write FOR readers.)

no one write diary in that way normally - or it is no longer a diary in the *USUAL* sense if you insist on calling it a `diary'. dairy implies privacy, though the writer may not care if others happened to read it.

b) so blog has a gene of community-formation, though blog has a sense of `individualistic'.

think about the defining features/functions that a blogging software should provide, beside those functions that help one publish and decorate the `webpages'.

dairy is tended to be private. it is not intended to form a reader community.

c) a blog community is not merely a reader community. in the blog community, everybody writes his own blog, but they answer each others. (note: there are a lot of separated / thinly-unconnected communities in the blogosphere.)

d) a blog community is not a forum community. people in a forum write in a common board, while people in a blog community write in their own places. forum is collective while blog is individualistic.

this resembles the relationship between the writers in 大字報 and 副刊專欄.
