thoughts on blog

  • on blog (草草記下一些對blog的念頭)

    1. blog 跟 email 和 bbs 不同, 是有核心意義,卻無明確分界的概念. and what matters is the form, not the use, content and quality.

    2. i agree with tungpo that weblog is more like (明清)筆記 (as many of us 不約而同地 employed such a name for our blogs )

    3. or 個人專欄 in today's language.

    4. weblog is not diary, (though you can use weblog or anything to write diary), because

    a) bloggers aware the existence of the potential readers beside himself, though some of them know, and maybe enjoy, that there is none. (that does not mean that bloggers write FOR readers.)

no one write diary in that way normally - or it is no longer a diary in the *USUAL* sense if you insist on calling it a `diary'. dairy implies privacy, though the writer may not care if others happened to read it.

    b) so blog has a gene of community-formation, though blog has a sense of `individualistic'.

think about the defining features/functions that a blogging software should provide, beside those functions that help one publish and decorate the `webpages'.

dairy is tended to be private. it is not intended to form a reader community.

    c) a blog community is not merely a reader community. in the blog community, everybody writes his own blog, but they answer each others. (note: there are a lot of separated / thinly-unconnected communities in the blogosphere.)

    d) a blog community is not a forum community. people in a forum write in a common board, while people in a blog community write in their own places. forum is collective while blog is individualistic.

this resembles the relationship between the writers in 大字報 and 副刊專欄.

    5. thanks to sidekick; these thoughts come from her feedback to my comment on 冠而的影片. she points me one of the essence of blog: trackback.

    6. to do (trackback in blogspot):
adapt the following codes into the template, with fields pre-filled. this may result in auto-trackback that blogspot lacks.

Point 4 a) is actually debatable. It's not a diary in the usual sense of just logging one's life as time progress, I agree up to that point, but can you say it's not provate? That's the grey area, because although other people can see it, the author felt no sense of impreachment of privacy because no one will know their real indentity, as far as objectiveness is concerned, the content can be fake as well as real.

That's what's powerful about blogs - you can express your most innate feelings whilst maintaining anonymity, with this anonymity there's no impreachment of privacy.

If you look up the definition of the word "diary" in the dictionary it should tell you this: "A daily record, especially a personal record of events, experiences, and observations; a journal." The dictionary will emphasise on the fact that it's a personal record, and although there's an element of privacy involved in the word "personal", whether a blog is private or not is still debatable, and therefore if no privacy was impreached, then the criticism that a blog isn't a diary is invalid, because a blog can infact be used as a personal diary; however a mere diary cannot be a blog, because it lacks what a blog CAN have.

Thank you for replying me. :D

What I think is somehow different. I think that a blog can involve a diary, however a mere online diary cannot be a blog. This is down to what people define as a blog.

My definition is as follow: "Blog is the ultimate method of expression. It's easier than literature or painting, and one can share their most innate feelings and thoughts whilst maintaining anonymity. They are there to fulfill purposes, whether personal desires - instinctive human desires to express and seek attention, or utilitarian/authoratarian desires. Topics can be as personal or as broad as one likes, taylor-made to fit everyone's taste."

For me, a blog can be anything, and I have adopted a very broad definition is because any precise definition at this moment will confine what a blog will potentially develop into (It's only around for 10 years you know). Based on my definition, a blog can be anything, including a diary; however, for a diary, which has a well-defined definition, it cannot be a blog because it doesn't fulfill my definition for a blog.

    Yes, that's what I meant.

A blog can be a diary, but a mere diary cannot be a blog, for the reason I've given above.

Therefore, if you would like to follow what I've commented in my blog on this topic, I hope you will understand my discontent towards "Give blog a definition", because I think people are getting it wrong, even though what they say may seem reasonable to others.

Yes, that's what I meant'.

希望你也能明白, 這也正是那些說 `blog不是diary' 的blogger的意思, that's also what they meant.'

Yes, I agree with you, maybe I was being too cynical before, and I just now hope that fellow bloggers can suceed in what they plan to do.
